Brain Food

Use it or lose it.

At the end of your day, as you’re reclined in the family room, channel surfing or lying on your bed, ask yourself this simple question…Did I learn something new today?

This is not a criticism, nor a statement on your productivity or priorities. It’s simply a question…Did I learn something new today?

I’m not referring to updates on your spouse’s day or your children’s latest achievements. Nor am I talking about the cacophony of partisan opinions or sensationalized celebrity misbehavior that has taken over much of our national news focus.

This is not about them. It’s about you. Did you expand your knowledge base today? Did you read an interesting fact of science, expose yourself to a new genre of music, take a moment to dig into the depth of a piece of art, read a poem or literary passage, or take a moment to ponder an especially inspirational quote you heard in passing? Do you have a better view of our world today than you did yesterday, simply because you learned something new?

By all means, exercise your body, nurture your personal relationships, do whatever you can to advance your career or life’s work. But take time for you, too. You have complete control over how you spend your time and where your attention is given. So as you towel off after your evening run, turn off the television, pass by TMZ, and feed your intellect. You might be surprised how much fun you can have.

Just a few of my daily distractions. Go...feed your brain. And enjoy!
